EPL: Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s Late Penalty Secures Vital Point for Everton Against Newcastle

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s late penalty against Newcastle, earned Everton a vital point in their survival against relegation.

In a crucial battle to avoid relegation, Everton gained a vital point as Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted a late penalty to secure a draw against Europe-chasing Newcastle.

The match saw Alexander Isak open the scoring for Newcastle in the 15th minute, taking advantage of a well-placed ball from Harvey Barnes to calmly slot the ball past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Despite some chances for Everton, including a disallowed goal for offside and an Isak attempt cleared off the line, the visitors struggled to find an equalizer.

However, Everton was handed a late lifeline when Paul Dummett was deemed to have fouled Ashley Young in the box, leading to a penalty decision after a VAR review.

Referee Tony Harrington initially did not award the penalty but changed his decision after viewing the incident on the pitchside monitor.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe accepted the penalty decision, citing the clear foul on Young by Dummett. Everton boss Sean Dyche, while pleased with the late equalizer, questioned the delay in awarding the penalty, stating that it should have been given immediately upon review.

The draw leaves Everton in 16th place in the Premier League but provides them with a four-point cushion over 18th-placed Luton Town.

Dyche expressed hope that the goal would boost Calvert-Lewin’s confidence after a goal drought of 23 games, highlighting the striker’s hard work and importance to the team’s objectives.

Despite the draw, both teams will continue their battles in their respective ends of the Premier League table, with Everton aiming to secure their top-flight status and Newcastle pushing for European qualification.
