Moroccan Women Close in on Olympic Games Spot with Thrilling Away Victory Over Zambia

In a captivating first-leg encounter, the Moroccan women’s national team took a significant step towards securing a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a dramatic 2-1 victory against hosts Zambia in Ndola on Friday.

The Atlas Lionesses sealed the crucial away win in dramatic fashion, with striker Rosella Ayane netting the winner in the 95th minute, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan contingent.

This important triumph places the Atlas Lionesses in a commanding position as they prepare for the return leg scheduled on home turf next Tuesday, aiming to seal their qualification for the prestigious Olympic event.

Under the strategic guidance of coach Jorge Vilda, the Moroccan squad showcased exceptional resilience and skill to outmaneuver their Zambian counterparts led by Bruce Mwape.

Despite facing early pressure, the Atlas Lionesses held firm and even survived a penalty scare in the 33rd minute, brilliantly thwarted by Moroccan goalkeeper Khadija Rmichi, who denied Prisca Chilufya’s attempt.

However, just before halftime, Morocco turned the tide in their favor with a stunning goal by Zineb Redouani in the 45th minute from an impressive 30 yards out, leaving Zambian goalkeeper Eunice Sakala stranded.

The second half saw relentless pressure from Zambia, leading to an equalizer from Lushomo Mweemba in the 80th minute, setting up a tense finale.

Yet, when the match seemed destined for a draw, Ayane emerged as the hero for Morocco, delivering the decisive goal in the dying moments of the game, securing a vital victory for her team.

As Jorge Vilda’s squad prepares to host Zambia in the return leg, they will be looking to replicate their stellar performance and secure their ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, fueled by determination and the desire to make history for Moroccan women’s football.
