In a press briefing on Tuesday, the Otun Balogun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abimbola Ajibola, voiced his apprehension regarding the fitness of the Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, to ascend to the throne.
The declaration follows the recent vacancy in the Olubadan stool following the passing of Oba Lekan Balogun, who reigned for two years until his demise at the age of 81.
Addressing reporters at his Sanyo private residence in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, Oba Ajibola underscored concerns over Olakulehin’s health status, asserting that the prospective ruler is currently indisposed and unfit for the responsibilities of kingship. “What is in need of a hurry? Someone (Olakulehin) we have not seen. He has not spoken with us. He has not spoken with Ibadan people,” stated Oba Ajibola, expressing his reservations regarding the readiness of the Olubadan-designate.
Emphasising the absence of communication from Olakulehin and the lack of interaction with key stakeholders, Oba Ajibola stressed the importance of allowing the prospective ruler time to recover fully before assuming the throne. Refuting claims of an endorsement made during a recent meeting at Chief Bode Amoo’s residence in Agodi Government Reserved Area, Oba Ajibola distanced himself from any such decision, citing his stance against what he deems an “illegality.” He urged patience and cautioned against rushing Olakulehin into his new role.
Otun Balogun Olubadan’s remarks underscore a broader debate within the Ibadan community regarding the timing and suitability of Olakulehin’s ascension, signalling a potential delay in the traditional succession process until his health improves.
