Two prominent figures in the Yoruba self-determination movement, Professor Banji Akintoye and Chief Sunday Adeyemo, commonly known as Sunday Igboho, have distanced themselves from a group of agitators who invaded the Oyo State Government Secretariat in Ibadan on Saturday.
Professor Akintoye stated that the actions of the agitators were not in line with the goals of the Yoruba people, emphasizing that they were not fighting for Yoruba interests but rather against them.
He clarified that neither he nor Chief Sunday Igboho were aware of or supported the actions of the agitators.
According to Akintoye, the agitators reportedly appointed an interim government for the Yoruba Nation and attempted to take over the region from the Oyo State secretariat, prompting the deployment of individuals in military camouflage.
He emphasized that their movement, the authentic Yoruba Nation Movement, had no connection to the group responsible for the incident.
Similarly, Sunday Igboho stated that he had no knowledge of the incident and would never be involved in such actions.
He stressed that any engagement in the struggle for the Yoruba Nation would be made public and involve collaboration with other stakeholders.
Both Akintoye and Igboho condemned the actions of the agitators, describing them as a “lunatic fringe” and affirming their commitment to pursuing the Yoruba Nation’s freedom peacefully and orderly.
They emphasized the importance of transparency and collaboration in their movement, contrasting it with the unauthorized actions taken by the group in Ibadan.
