The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced its intention to probe and possibly prosecute more celebrities involved in the act of spraying and mutilating Naira at social events.
According to Dele Oyewale, the agency’s spokesperson, the EFCC has invited several celebrities implicated in Naira abuse, following the recent directive to its Special Task Force against Naira Abuse and the dollarization of the economy, to intensify efforts to curb such practices.
Oyewale disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja, emphasising that the recent surge in videos depicting Naira abuse has prompted a thorough investigation by the commission.
He highlighted the case of controversial cross-dresser, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, who was recently sentenced to six months of imprisonment without the option of a fine for Naira abuse.
Providing an update on the matter, Oyewale stated that the EFCC has received numerous videos implicating individuals in similar offences, indicating a growing awareness among citizens regarding the sanctity of the national currency.
He affirmed, “At the moment, the commission is investigating several celebrities involved in Naira abuse. Many of them have made useful statements to the commission and many more have been invited by investigators working on the matter.”
Oyewale futher emphasised the EFCC’s commitment to prosecuting anyone found guilty of Naira abuse, emphasising that the agency will not tolerate infractions against the nation’s currency.
He cautioned the public to refrain from engaging in such acts, reminding them of the consequences of violating laws against Naira abuse.
