The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, ahead of his arraignment for alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency, the naira.
Cubana Chief Priest is set to appear before Justice Kehinde Ogundare at the Federal High Court in Lagos today.
The charges against Cubana Chief Priest stem from his actions during social events where he allegedly sprayed and tampered with N500 notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed Cubana Chief Priest’s detention, stating that he will face three counts related to the abuse of the naira, as outlined in the Central Bank Act of 2007.
The EFCC’s move follows a similar case involving popular cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, who was recently convicted and sentenced to six months in prison for similar offenses.
The commission has been actively investigating celebrities and individuals suspected of abusing the national currency.
In response to criticism and backlash, the EFCC clarified that it would focus on probing new cases of naira abuse, rather than old videos circulating on social media.
The agency emphasized its commitment to upholding the sanctity of the Nigerian currency and prosecuting those involved in its abuse.
