The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians against obstructing its operatives while they are carrying out their lawful duties.
This cautionary statement follows an incident where security aides linked to former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, reportedly impeded EFCC agents from effecting an arrest at his Abuja residence.
According to Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the EFCC, obstructing officers of the commission during the execution of their lawful duties constitutes a criminal offence.
Oyewale underscored that offenders could face a minimum jail term of five years, citing relevant provisions of the law.
The EFCC spokesperson expressed concerns over instances where individuals or groups under investigation have resorted to employing thugs to disrupt the lawful operations of the commission.
Despite facing provocation, Oyewale highlighted that EFCC operatives have exercised restraint to maintain law and order, albeit at the risk of being perceived as weak.
Oyewale emphasised the Commission’s firm stance against any attempts to obstruct its operations, asserting that such actions would be met with appropriate punitive measures.
The warning comes amid reports that the current Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, assisted his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, in evading arrest.
Eyewitnesses reported the arrival of Governor Ododo at Bello’s residence, accompanied by heavy security personnel.
Shortly thereafter, Bello was seen leaving the premises in the governor’s vehicle, escorted by his security detail. Subsequently, EFCC operatives, who had been stationed at the location, withdrew, followed by other security agents.
The EFCC’s unequivocal message serves as a reminder of the legal ramifications of obstructing law enforcement activities and underscores the Commission’s commitment to upholding the rule of law in Nigeria.
