The National Assembly Calls for Prioritizing Nigeria’s Integrity in the Appointment of Super Eagles Coach
The National Assembly has issued a strong call to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Ministry of Sports to prioritize Nigeria’s integrity in the selection of the next Super Eagles Coach.
Following the departure of former Super Eagles Coach Jose Peseiro in February, the NFF has yet to name a successor, with crucial World Cup qualifying matches looming.
The House Committee on Sports stressed the critical need to uphold Nigeria’s reputation before finalizing the appointment of the Super Eagles coach, citing past instances where the country’s image suffered due to payment issues with foreign coaches.
The committee expressed support for hiring a foreign coach but underlined the necessity for the NFF and the Ministry of Sports to ensure transparent payment arrangements to avoid indebtedness.
Hon. Ekene Adams, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, emphasized the importance of considering qualified indigenous coaches who possess the requisite experience and qualifications to lead the national team successfully.
Transparency in the selection process was highlighted as paramount to guaranteeing the selection of the most suitable candidate to lead the Super Eagles.
Adams stated, “We must hire a coach we can afford to pay consistently and avoid any controversies that could tarnish Nigeria’s reputation.”
He also urged consideration of qualified indigenous coaches such as Daniel Amokachi, Finidi George, Emmanuel Amunike, and others who have expressed interest in leading the team to success.
The Super Eagles, currently with two points from two games, are gearing up to face South Africa in Uyo and Benin Republic in Abidjan in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
