Residents of Iperu, in the Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, are on the verge of staging a protest against the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) due to prolonged power outages lasting 120 days.
The youth of Iperu, through the Iperu Youth Development Association, have issued a stern ultimatum to the IBEDC, demanding the immediate restoration of power supply within seven days or face severe consequences.
The community, which is notably the hometown of Governor Dapo Abiodun and his closest political rival, Ladi Adebutu, has been enduring total blackouts, leading to frustration and despair among residents.
Ganiyu Hammed, the Youth President, expressed the community’s discontent, citing neighboring towns connected to the same power line enjoying uninterrupted electricity while Iperu remains in darkness.
Hammed highlighted the deteriorating situation, not only in terms of electricity but also concerning security issues plaguing the town. Recent incidents, including kidnappings and a tragic killing, have heightened concerns among residents, prompting the youth to demand action from both the IBEDC and security agencies.
In response, the IBEDC spokesperson, Busolami Tunwase, attributed the blackouts to restricted allocation, a challenge affecting Ogun State as a whole. Tunwase explained that while some parts of Iperu are on 33kV lines supplied by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, others face limitations in supply.
