Defence Headquarters Challenges Katsina Governor Over Allegations Of Security Personnel Aiding Banditry

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has called on Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda to provide evidence supporting his claim that some security personnel are involved in and profiting from banditry in the state.

The DHQ emphasized that the Armed Forces serve all Nigerians and encouraged anyone with credible information about misconduct to come forward.

In a statement released yesterday, Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, responded to Radda’s comments made during a national television program on May 4.

The governor had alleged that banditry had become a business venture involving criminals, government officials, and some security personnel, hindering efforts to eradicate it.

Gen. Buba refuted the governor’s claims, warning that such statements could demoralize troops. He urged Governor Radda to bring any substantiated allegations to the military high command rather than making public accusations.

Buba reiterated the military’s zero-tolerance policy for indiscipline and criminality under the leadership of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Christopher Musa, noting that standing court martials are in place to address any misconduct by troops.

The Defence spokesperson assured that the military remains focused on its operations and committed to fighting terrorism despite statements that could potentially demoralize its personnel. He called on citizens to report any credible misconduct within the military ranks to ensure appropriate justice.

Additionally, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja commended the Nigerian Army Corps of Signals for its crucial role in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast.

Speaking at the inauguration of the remodeled Headquarters of the Nigerian Signals Corps complex at Arakan Barracks in Lagos, Lagbaja praised the Corps for its contributions to anti-banditry operations in the Northwest and other engagements nationwide.

Lagbaja highlighted the Corps’ success in adapting to advancements in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and its impact on mission success.

He also noted the Army Signals’ support to other government agencies and the private sector, enhancing the Army’s image in the ICT domain.

The COAS mentioned various infrastructural developments aimed at improving living and working conditions for Army personnel, including new and renovated living quarters, potable water, and medical facilities. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support of the Army and its leadership.
