James Maddison Excluded from England’s Final Euro 2024 Squad
In a surprising turn of events, Tottenham midfielder James Maddison will not be part of England’s 26-man squad for Euro 2024. Despite being named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man selection, Maddison is one of the seven players set to be cut from the final roster (As reported by the BBC).
Maddison, who has earned seven senior caps for England, participated in the recent friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina, coming off the bench in a 3-0 victory at St James’ Park. However, his exclusion from the final squad means he will not travel to Germany for the tournament.
The 27-year-old was also part of Southgate’s squad for the 2022 World Cup but did not make an appearance in Qatar. After joining Tottenham from Leicester City in a £40 million move last summer, Maddison’s season started strong but was marred by injuries, leading to inconsistent performances.
Southgate is tasked with finalizing the squad ahead of the tournament, with the official announcement set for Saturday following England’s last warm-up friendly against Iceland at Wembley on Friday.
In contrast, Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has not been ruled out of the squad. Shaw returned to training on Wednesday after a prolonged injury absence, potentially bolstering England’s defensive options for the upcoming competition.
