Weghorst Secures Late Winner as Netherlands Edge Past Poland in Euro 2024 Opener.
Substitute Wout Weghorst clinched a dramatic late winner just two minutes after coming on, as the Netherlands began their Euro 2024 campaign with a 2-1 victory against Poland at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion.
Despite a tense atmosphere following a police shooting incident near a fan gathering area earlier in the day, the match proceeded and provided an entertaining spectacle.
Poland, missing their all-time top scorer Robert Lewandowski due to a thigh injury, initially shocked the Dutch with an early goal. Adam Buksa headed home to give Poland the lead.
The Netherlands dominated possession and created numerous chances, but struggled to find the back of the net until Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo’s deflected shot finally beat Wojciech Szczesny, levelling the score.
Gakpo continued to threaten, but squandered a golden opportunity to put his side ahead just before the break, sending Nathan Ake’s pullback over the bar from close range.
Ronald Koeman’s team maintained their dominance in the second half. Szczesny made a crucial save to deny Denzel Dumfries, and promising youngster Xavi Simons narrowly missed the target after being set up by Gakpo.
As the game seemed destined for a draw, Burnley striker Weghorst, introduced in the 81st minute, secured the win with a close-range finish moments after coming on.
This victory provides a significant boost for the Netherlands, who now look ahead to a challenging Group D clash against France on Friday. Poland, meanwhile, will aim to bounce back when they face Austria on the same day.
