Chile Frustrated After Stop-Start Copa America Draw with Peru.
Coach Ricardo Gareca expressed his frustration over Chile’s inability to find their rhythm in a stop-start 0-0 draw against Peru in the Copa America on Friday. However, he remains confident about his side’s chances of qualifying for the knockout stages.
The match, held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, saw Chile marginally better in a bruising first half, while Peru created the best opportunities after the break. Unfortunately, neither side could find the breakthrough on a night filled with frustration for both players and fans.
The contest was marred by frequent stoppages, with 37 fouls committed, and numerous injuries adding to the interruptions. “We tried to play, but Peru were very strong in their defence and they were able to break up our game,” said Gareca, who coached Peru from 2015 to 2022. “The referee allowed a lot of that type of play, leading to many breaks. It was tough for us to create and come up with opportunities.”
Following the draw, Chile and Peru each earned a point, trailing Group A leaders Argentina by two points after the defending champions’ 2-0 win over Canada on Thursday. “We were unable to create many plays and execute them. We were under a lot of pressure and sometimes our passes lacked accuracy,” Gareca added. “I’m not concerned. I think this will be useful for us to analyse and improve our game. Of course, we hoped to win, but it’s important to take a point, and we still have two matches ahead of us.”
Peru’s coach, Jorge Fossati, praised his team’s execution of their game plan. “This was a very relevant match for both teams. It was a strategic and tactical game,” he said. “We knew that if we gave some leeway to the opponent, it would give them a tool or a weapon that could hurt us. We were aggressive, but it was an even and fair game. I expected this level of interruption.”
Chile will face group leaders Argentina in New Jersey on Tuesday, while Peru takes on Canada in Kansas City.
