The Lagos State Government has issued a 14-day removal notice to owners of buildings and structures constructed on drainage channels.
This announcement came from Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, following an inspection tour of various contravention sites and ongoing drainage enforcement projects in Ago Palace Way, Isolo, Sangotedo, Lekki, and Ikoyi.
Mr. Wahab emphasised the government’s commitment to restoring order and environmental discipline in Lagos. “The era of environmental indiscipline and nuisance is over in Lagos. We will not shy away from enforcing all relevant laws, irrespective of whose ox is gored,” he stated.
Highlighting the health risks associated with poor drainage, particularly in light of a recent cholera outbreak, Wahab underscored the interconnectedness of environmental management and public health. “Climate change is real, and there is a cholera outbreak. We must understand that all these issues are interwoven. People cannot continue to brazenly abuse the environment and expect that there will be no consequences,” he said.
In addition to the 14-day removal notice, a 48-hour contravention notice has been served to owners of buildings within drainage channels at Sangotedo, near Lagos Business School. The state government plans to commence full enforcement of the law once these notices expire.
The commissioner’s tour and subsequent notices reflect the government’s proactive stance on tackling environmental indiscipline and promoting public health and safety in Lagos.
