Shkodran Mustafi Announces Retirement From Football As He Transitions Into Coaching With Germany U-17s

Former Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 32. The German international will be taking on a new role as assistant manager for Germany’s U-17 national team.

Mustafi, who enjoyed a varied and successful career, played for several notable clubs throughout his time as a professional footballer, began his career in the youth ranks of Hamburger SV and English club Everton, where he made one substitute appearance for them before leaving to Sampdoria in January 2012. He signed a five-year deal at Valencia in August 2014, and moved to Arsenal for a reported £35 million two years later. He played 151 games for Arsenal and was part of the team that won the FA Cup in 2017. He later joined Schalke in the Bundesliga and most recently played for Levante in Spain.

Mustafi likewise made his full international debut against Poland on 13 May 2014, and was part of the German teams that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, also competing at UEFA Euro 2016.

In a statement, Mustafi expressed his gratitude for his career and excitement for his new position. “I am grateful for the journey I have had in professional football and am looking forward to the next chapter in my career as assistant manager for Germany’s U-17s. It’s a privilege to work with the young talents of our nation.”

The football community has responded with warm wishes and support for Mustafi in his new role. Arsenal, among other clubs and fans, extended their best wishes to him.

Mustafi’s transition from player to coach marks the beginning of a new chapter in his football journey, where he will continue to contribute to the sport by nurturing and guiding the next generation of football talent in Germany.
