France Edge Out Portugal In Penalty Shootout To Reach Euro 2024 Semi-Finals

France Edge Out Portugal in Penalty Shootout to Reach Euro 2024 Semi-Finals.

In a tense showdown in Hamburg, France triumphed over Portugal in a penalty shootout to secure their place in the semi-finals of Euro 2024. Theo Hernandez scored the decisive penalty after Portugal’s Joao Felix struck the post, resulting in the only miss of the shootout.

Following the victory, French players sprinted to the other end of the pitch to celebrate with their fans. In contrast, the Portuguese team, who had previously overcome Slovenia via a shootout five days ago, were left to console their supporters, feeling deflated by the narrow defeat.

This match marked the end of an era for Portugal’s captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who had confirmed earlier in the week that this would be his final European Championship. Despite the high anticipation for a clash between the 39-year-old Ronaldo and France’s Kylian Mbappe, both players had a limited impact on the game. Ronaldo did successfully convert his spot-kick, while Mbappe, nursing a broken nose and substituted during extra time after a knock to the face, was unable to participate in the shootout.

The match itself was cagey, with few clear-cut chances. Portugal had the better opportunities, with Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha both denied by France’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan. France’s Randal Kolo Muani saw his shot deflected narrowly wide by Ruben Dias, and Eduardo Camavinga missed a golden chance, dragging his effort just beyond the far post.

In extra time, Portugal’s talisman Ronaldo missed a golden opportunity, firing a cutback from Francisco Conceicao over the bar, much to the astonishment of the fans behind the goal. This miss proved costly as Portugal’s luck ran out in their second consecutive shootout.

France’s victory sets up a semi-final clash with Spain in Munich on Tuesday, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 BST.
