Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has advocated for the devolution of power as a solution to Nigeria’s pressing economic issues, including unemployment and hyperinflation.
The governor made these remarks during the 10th undergraduate and 6th postgraduate convocation ceremony at Adeleke University on Sunday, July 21, 2024.
Addressing the graduating class, Governor Adeleke acknowledged the difficult economic climate they are entering but encouraged them to view these challenges as opportunities to apply their entrepreneurial skills.
“At the National Economic Council meetings, both federal and state governments regularly brainstorm on finding solutions to the economic hardship, unemployment, and hyperinflation facing the nation,” Adeleke stated. He emphasized that while various options are being explored, his administration believes the key lies in devolving powers and financial responsibilities to state governments.
The governor called for an urgent transfer of items from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list, arguing that states are better positioned to handle many responsibilities currently managed by the federal government. “The solution is more devolution rather than more centralization of governance powers and responsibilities,” he asserted.
Adeleke stressed the importance of focusing on economic federalism to enhance subnational prosperity, create job opportunities, and boost local capacity across various sectors.
Professor Solomon Adebola, the Vice Chancellor of Adeleke University, revealed that the institution graduated a total of 1,092 students, comprising 976 undergraduates and 116 postgraduates. Notably, 115 students achieved First-class Honours.
The convocation ceremony, held at the institution’s stadium, marks a significant milestone for the university and its graduates as they prepare to enter a challenging job market amidst ongoing national economic difficulties.
