Nigeria Sports Minister John Enoh Blows Hot Over Favour Ofili Registration Blunder.

In a recent development, Nigeria’s Sports Minister, John Enoh, has expressed strong disapproval regarding the registration mishap involving sprinter Favour Ofili for the Paris Olympics. During his visit to the Games Village on 28 July 2024, Enoh held a candid session with Team Nigeria athletes and later had personal interactions to address their concerns directly.

Favour Ofili, who reached out to Minister Enoh expressing her worries about her races, has faced issues before. Recalling her problems at the African Championships in Douala, Enoh had previously sought to understand her side of the story. This time, he immediately contacted Professor Ken Anugweje, head of the Ministerial Podium Performance Committee, to ensure Ofili’s concerns were addressed. Anugweje confirmed that he was in touch with the 1st Vice President of the NOC, Chief Solomon Ogba, and that the issue was being handled.

Upon learning of Ofili’s distress, Enoh reached out to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN). The AFN Technical Director, Samuel Onikeku, confirmed that Ofili was registered for the 100m, 200m, and the 4x100m relay. The AFN Secretary General also insisted that the final list sent to the NOC included Ofili for the 100m. Enoh is currently awaiting an explanation from the NOC President.

Minister Enoh, emphasising Ofili’s impressive track record, declared that such negligence would not be tolerated. He stated, “This utter recklessness is highly inexcusable, and there will be thorough sanctions after investigations into where and from whom this gross negligence originated.”

As an immediate measure, Enoh has instructed the AFN and the NOC to ensure that Favour Ofili is not deprived of the opportunity to compete in the races for which she is qualified. He reaffirmed Ofili’s commitment and readiness to prove her mettle at the Paris Olympics.
