Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has announced a 24-hour curfew in response to violent protests over economic hardship.
The decision was revealed in a statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, on Thursday.
The curfew follows an Emergency State Security Council meeting, which focused on addressing the rising violence and disruptions stemming from the civil demonstrations. The council unanimously agreed on the curfew to protect lives and safeguard public and private property.
Tofa emphasised the necessity of the curfew to restore order and ensure community safety. “The imposition of this curfew is a necessary measure to restore order and ensure the safety of our communities. It is paramount that we protect our citizens from further harm and preserve the sanctity of our state’s institutions and businesses,” he stated.
Governor Yusuf urged citizens to remain vigilant and united during this difficult period, cautioning against division caused by the actions of a few individuals. “Let us not allow the actions of a few selfish individuals to divide us. Together, we can navigate these challenges and fortify our resolve to build a stronger, more resilient Kano State,” he said.
The statement also noted that all security agencies in the state have been directed to enforce the curfew fully. Citizens are urged to comply with the directive for their own safety and the well-being of the community.
Reports indicate that prior to the curfew, hoodlums had looted the newly built Nigeria Communication Commission Industrial Park in Kano State.
