DSS Investigates Seven Polish Nationals Over Kano Protests

The Department of State Service (DSS) is currently investigating seven Polish nationals arrested in connection with the violent #EndBadGovernance protests in Kano.

This was revealed by the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, during a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and members of the Diplomatic Corps on Wednesday.

Addressing questions, Afunanya explained that the Polish nationals were detained due to the display of foreign flags during the protests in the North-West. He assured that their arrest was not a targeted action against Polish nationals, but part of an ongoing investigation.

The meeting, which was attended by Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, a representative of the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, and the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, followed the nationwide protests that began on August 1, 2024.

During the meeting, Foreign Affairs Minister Tuggar emphasized the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance socioeconomic development, noting that these initiatives have reduced the country’s debt servicing spending from 90 percent to 68 percent. He also mentioned other government interventions aimed at ensuring food security, creating jobs, and promoting investments.

Tuggar expressed concern over the negative narratives circulating on social media, which he said are threatening the peace and stability of the nation. He reassured that the Federal Government is committed to protecting both members of the Diplomatic Corps and Nigerians in accordance with international laws.

The minister also issued a stern warning that the government will not spare anyone found guilty of funding the protests, whether from within or outside the country.
