Spain continued their remarkable dominance in international football by claiming the Olympic men’s gold at Paris 2024, defeating hosts France in a thrilling final that required extra time. In a match full of twists and turns, Spain emerged victorious 5-3, securing their first Olympic gold since 1992.
France took an early lead in front of a fervent home crowd, but Spain quickly turned the tide, scoring twice before half-time to go 2-1 up. The second half saw France mount an impressive comeback, levelling the score at 3-3 and forcing the game into extra time.
However, the Spanish side held their nerve as substitute Sergio Camello became the hero of the night. The Rayo Vallecano forward netted two crucial goals in extra time, sealing the victory for Spain. The Spanish players celebrated wildly, mobbing Camello as they basked in the glory of their hard-fought triumph.
This victory is the latest in a string of successes for Spain, coming just over a month after their senior men’s team won the European Championship by defeating England in the final. It also follows their under-19 European title win and the women’s World Cup victory last year, cementing Spain’s status as a football powerhouse.
Despite the initial disappointment, the French team received their silver medals to a more celebratory atmosphere. France’s coach, Thierry Henry, reflected on the campaign, stating, “It wasn’t easy to build this team up, but I’m proud of the work we did.”
The result leaves France in fifth place on the Paris 2024 medal table, tied with Great Britain on 14 golds but trailing by one in the overall medal count.
