The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate investigation into the feeding conditions of inmates at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar.
The directive follows a video report circulating on Facebook that alleges inmates at the facility are being subjected to inhumane treatment, including being served poorly cooked beans for breakfast.
In a statement released on Sunday by the minister’s media aide, Babatunde Alao, Tunji-Ojo expressed serious concern over the disturbing allegations. “The Minister views this incident as a serious breach of the standards of care and dignity to which inmates are entitled,” the statement said.
Tunji-Ojo has called for a comprehensive and urgent investigation into the matter and has vowed that those found responsible will be held accountable. He also emphasised that any lapses in the quality of food, sanitation, and overall welfare of inmates will not be tolerated.
“The Minister of Interior will not condone any form of mistreatment or neglect of individuals in custody,” the statement added. The findings of the investigation will be made public, and appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken against those involved.
