Former England international and football pundit, Micah Richards, has strongly criticised the decision to send off Arsenal’s Declan Rice during their match against Brighton, calling it “one of the worst decisions” he has ever witnessed.
Speaking on the incident, Richards pointed out that Brighton’s Joao Pedro kicked the ball away first, yet escaped a booking. “Letter of the law? First point, Joao Pedro kicked the ball away. He kicked the ball away! He didn’t get a yellow card,” Richards remarked, expressing his disbelief at the inconsistency in the referee’s decisions.
Richards further argued that the yellow card given to Rice lacked common sense, especially given the context of the match. “If that’s a yellow card, football has officially gone. It was one of those moments when Brighton needed a breather. They weren’t wanting to take a quick free-kick anyway. If the referee had an ounce of common sense, he wouldn’t have given a yellow card for that,” he added.
