Gareth Southgate Reflects On England Tenure And Future Opportunities.

Former England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed that he is in no rush to make a decision on his next career move following his departure from the national team in July. After an impressive eight-year spell with the Three Lions, Southgate stepped down after England’s second consecutive European Championship final defeat, and while he remains open to new opportunities, he plans to take time before making any decisions.

At 54, Southgate has been linked with several high-profile roles, including a potential move to Manchester United as a successor to under-pressure coach Erik ten Hag. There have also been suggestions that he could take on a technical observer role at UEFA, European football’s governing body.

Speaking to Sky News, Southgate said: “I’ve got lots of opportunities, I’m very open-minded to what’s next. That might be in football, or it might be outside of football. I’m just going to take some time, refresh, recharge and go from there. I think at the moment people know that I need to get my energy back. I am not going to rush into anything. I want to make sure I make good decisions.”

Southgate’s tenure as England manager saw the team achieve significant milestones, including reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the quarter-finals in 2022, along with two consecutive European Championship final appearances. Reflecting on his time with England, Southgate said, “I don’t think you can have regrets. We made decisions with the information we had at the time to try and produce a winning team. I gave the job everything I had. We raised expectations and that was important. We needed to put English football back on the map.”

England are still searching for Southgate’s permanent replacement, with interim manager Lee Carsley having made a positive start with two 2-0 victories against Ireland and Finland.

As he weighs his future options, Southgate’s legacy with the national team remains secure, having played a pivotal role in restoring England’s presence on the global stage.
