Falconets Bow Out Of Colombia 2024 World Cup After Narrow Defeat To Japan.
Nigeria’s Falconets have been eliminated from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia after a valiant effort saw them narrowly lose 2-1 to Japan in the Round of 16. Despite a late goal by Olushola Shobowale, Japan, the reigning vice champions, secured the win with goals from Miyu Matsunaga and Maya Hijikata.
The match, held in driving rain at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogotá, was a tense and thrilling encounter, showcasing the skill and resilience of both teams. Japan’s pace and tactical approach posed early threats, with Maya Hijikata almost scoring in the 13th minute, though Nigeria’s Comfort Folorunsho managed to clear the ball off the line. However, the pressure eventually paid off, and in the 33rd minute, Matsunaga capitalised on a cross by Rihona Ujihara to give Japan the lead.
Nigeria fought back with their fit-fighting and organised play, nearly levelling the score before half-time when Rofiat Imuran’s in-swinger rattled the Japanese defence. However, Japan maintained control, with Hijikata scoring her second goal in the 66th minute after a well-delivered cross by Chinari Sasai.
The Falconets refused to give up, and their determination was rewarded when Shobowale slotted home a cross from substitute Goodness Osigwe in added time. However, the goal came too late to change the outcome.
With this result, Japan moves on to face Spain in the quarter-finals in what will be a rematch of the 2022 final in Costa Rica.
