Van Persie Vows To Stay Strong After Heerenveen’s Record 9:1 Defeat To AZ Alkmaar.

Robin van Persie has promised that his Heerenveen side will remain true to their style of play despite suffering a record 9-1 defeat to AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch league. The heavy loss marked only the fourth match of Van Persie’s managerial career, following his appointment as head coach in May.

The 41-year-old former Netherlands, Arsenal, and Manchester United striker, who scored 50 goals in 102 international appearances, acknowledged the challenge of the defeat but maintained a positive outlook.

“This is tough,” Van Persie admitted after the game. “You’ll encounter a number of bumps in your career. This was a very big bump. We learned a few more lessons from this match than we normally would.”

AZ Alkmaar took the lead early on, with Sven Mijnans opening the scoring after just four minutes. Heerenveen responded well, with Luuk Brouwers netting an equaliser midway through the first half. However, the joy was short-lived, as former Tottenham striker Troy Parrott restored AZ’s advantage with his first goal for the club since his £6.7 million summer move.

The second half saw the game unravel for Heerenveen, with Republic of Ireland forward Parrott scoring a quick-fire hat-trick, adding three goals in just eight minutes. As Van Persie watched on, his side conceded four more goals in the final 20 minutes, sealing a historic victory for AZ and moving them up to second place in the Eredivisie table.

For Heerenveen, the result marked the first time the club had ever conceded nine goals in a league match, leaving them 12th in the standings with four points from Van Persie’s first four games in charge.

Despite the setback, Van Persie was adamant that neither he nor his players would be deterred by the result.

“This is part of football. I have not been traumatised by this, and neither have my players,” he said. “Even when things aren’t going your way, with three goals in quick succession in the second half, it’s important to keep doing the things you agreed on.

“We’ll keep playing our own game. That’s what I believe in and what we believe in.”

As Heerenveen look to bounce back from this defeat, Van Persie’s determination to stick to his principles will be key to turning their fortunes around in the coming weeks.
