Nigeria Draws Tough Opponents In Inaugural Women’s Amputee Football World Cup.
Nigeria’s women’s amputee football team, the Special Falcons, have been drawn into Group C of the maiden Women’s Amputee Football World Cup. The draw, which took place in Bogota, has placed Nigeria alongside strong opponents: Ecuador, the USA, and Ukraine as earlier reported by Sports24.
This historic event marks the first time nations are coming together to compete in the women’s division of amputee football, and it will run from 4th to 10th November 2024 in Barranquilla, Colombia. The tournament is set to showcase the best amputee football talent from across the globe.
The Special Falcons are currently deep in preparation for the tournament, holding a training camp in Abuja where they are refining their skills. Despite the stiff competition in Group C, with the USA and Ukraine highly regarded in the sport and Ecuador expected to bring a distinctive South American style, Nigeria remains optimistic.
Head coach Munkwoba Tala Gomam expressed confidence in the team during a press briefing, stating, “Our women are warriors, and we are confident they will make the country proud. They are not just athletes; they are symbols of hope and inspiration.”
The tournament will feature three groups: Group A includes host nation Colombia, Brazil, Poland, and Cameroon, while Group B consists of Peru, Haiti, England, and Kenya. Teams will be competing for top spots to progress to the knockout stages and ultimately the final.
The Special Falcons are determined to make their mark in this landmark competition, which represents a major step forward for inclusivity and diversity in global sports.
