President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) following her confirmation by the Senate on 25 September 2024.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, where Kekere-Ekun took the oath of office and signed the oath register.
Justice Kekere-Ekun succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who served as CJN from 27 June 2022 until his retirement on 22 August 2024 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
The event was attended by three of her predecessors, including the first female CJN, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, as well as Justices Mahmud Mohammed, Walter Onnoghen, and her immediate predecessor, Justice Ariwoola. Members of Kekere-Ekun’s family and other justices of the Supreme Court were also present.
This marks the second time Justice Kekere-Ekun has taken the oath of office in five weeks. On 23 August, President Tinubu swore her in as acting CJN before her Senate confirmation.
