Leverkusen Surrender Two-Goal Lead As Holstein Kiel Stage Comeback.
Bayer Leverkusen allowed a two-goal advantage to slip as newly-promoted Holstein Kiel fought back to secure a 2-2 draw in the Bundesliga. Despite a strong start, Xabi Alonso’s side were unable to hold off a determined Kiel, who earned an impressive point.
Leverkusen, marking Alonso’s 100th game as manager, burst into life early on. Victor Boniface opened the scoring just minutes into the match, followed closely by Jonas Hofmann, who doubled the lead in the eighth minute. The home side looked in complete control, with the visitors struggling to get a foothold.
However, Kiel pulled one back just before half-time when Max Geschwill found the net in the dying moments of the first half, reducing the deficit and giving his side hope.
Kiel’s comeback was completed in the 69th minute when Jann-Fiete Arp calmly converted a penalty, placing the ball into the bottom right corner after Jeremie Frimpong’s challenge on Armin Gigovic inside the box. Despite Leverkusen’s early dominance, Kiel’s resilience earned them a share of the points.
This marks the second time this season that Leverkusen have let a two-goal lead slip, following a 3-2 defeat to RB Leipzig. The result leaves them in fifth place, two points behind league leaders Bayern Munich, who face Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.
For Leverkusen, it’s a missed opportunity in their quest to challenge for the top spot, while Kiel will take heart from their spirited fightback in what has been a promising campaign so far.
