Lewandowski’s Double Powers Barcelona To Victory Over Sevilla.
Robert Lewandowski continued his outstanding form, scoring twice as Barcelona cruised to a 5-1 victory over Sevilla, restoring their three-point lead at the top of La Liga. The 36-year-old striker’s brace took his tally to 14 goals in 12 games across all competitions this season, making him the top scorer in La Liga with 12 goals in 10 matches.
Barcelona, led by Hansi Flick, responded emphatically to Real Madrid’s 2-1 win at Celta Vigo with a dominant first-half display. They went 3-0 up by half-time for the third consecutive game, as Lewandowski netted twice, and Pedri added a spectacular strike.
Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 24th minute, calmly converting a penalty after Raphinha went down under minimal contact from Peque Fernandez. Just four minutes later, Pedri smashed in a stunning first-time shot from the edge of the box. Lewandowski then added his second, tapping in from Raphinha’s pass after being denied moments earlier by Sevilla goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.
The Polish forward’s two goals brought his total to 366 across Europe’s top-five leagues, making him the joint-third highest scorer of all time, alongside the legendary Jimmy Greaves. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (495) and Lionel Messi (496) have scored more.
In the second half, 21-year-old substitute Pablo Torre scored twice, including a deflected effort and a brilliant free-kick, to further extend Barcelona’s lead. Stanis Idumbo scored a late consolation for Sevilla, their only shot on target.
The match, held at Barcelona’s temporary home, the Olympic Stadium, also marked the return of Gavi, who received a warm reception from the fans after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained 11 months ago.
Barcelona, who have won nine of their opening 10 league games, now face two crucial matches next week. They will host Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday before a highly anticipated La Liga clash with title rivals Real Madrid on Saturday.
