Nigeria Police Investigates VeryDarkMan For Alleged Misuse Of Police Uniform.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has launched an investigation into social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as “VeryDarkMan,” following his unauthorised use of a police uniform and insignia in a recent video. The influencer, who appeared in full police attire, referred to himself as the “social media police,” sparking widespread reactions and prompting an official response from the NPF.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) page, the NPF condemned Otse’s actions, describing them as a violation of both the Criminal Code Law and the Penal Code Law. Specifically, the police cited Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code, which prohibit the unauthorised use of official police uniforms or symbols. Violations of these sections can lead to strict penalties.
The police statement read: “The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns the unauthorized use of official uniforms and accoutrements by an online personality, Mr. Martins Otse, popularly known as ‘VDM.’ The Force unequivocally disassociates itself from this unauthorised portrayal and has launched a full investigation to determine the source of the police gear used, as well as the authority under which he acted.”
While recognising the value of content creation and creativity, the NPF warned against the misuse of police symbols, stressing that such actions undermine the force’s integrity. The police emphasised that while they support young Nigerians in digital content creation, misrepresenting the police force is a serious offence and will not be tolerated.
This development underscores the Nigerian authorities’ commitment to preserving the sanctity of official uniforms and insignia, warning that misuse will be met with decisive action.
