Governor Fubara Addresses Court Ruling And Reaffirms Commitment To Rivers State.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has responded to a Federal High Court decision preventing the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from disbursing monthly allocations to the state. The ruling, delivered by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik in Abuja, cited constitutional breaches concerning the presentation of the 2024 budget to a four-member Rivers State House of Assembly.

Speaking during a special thanksgiving service on Wednesday, Fubara expressed indifference to the court’s decision, stating that he does not regret his pursuit of peace. However, he acknowledged that his approach, undertaken following President Bola Tinubu’s intervention, may have unintentionally empowered his opponents.

Justice Abdulmalik’s ruling argued that the disbursement of state allocations by Governor Fubara since January constituted a violation of the 1999 Constitution. The governor, in response, assured Rivers residents that his administration remains committed to fulfilling its financial obligations, including timely payments to contractors and government employees.

Fubara confirmed that funds for the 23 council chairmen would also be processed, following the finalisation of Joint Accounts Allocation Committee (JAAC) procedures. He encouraged his supporters to remain resilient, emphasising that challenges are surmountable with collective determination.

Reflecting on his administration’s accomplishments, Governor Fubara noted that he has successfully led Rivers State for over a year, conducted local government elections, and maintained a full cabinet amidst political opposition. He highlighted various ongoing projects across the state, countering critics who questioned his administration’s capacity to deliver.

The governor also referenced accolades received for Rivers State’s financial accountability and transparency, reinforcing his commitment to responsible governance.

Addressing the violent incident of October 30, 2023, which he characterised as an assassination attempt, Fubara attributed the attack to political adversaries. He explained that the ambush followed a legal withdrawal related to the Martin Amaewhule group, a decision influenced by President Tinubu’s intervention.

In conclusion, while Governor Fubara remains dedicated to peace, he recognised that his approach may have inadvertently strengthened his opponents, yet he reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Rivers State and their progress.
