President Tinubu Orders Immediate Release Of Minors Detained Over #EndBadGovernance Protests.
President Bola Tinubu has issued an order for the immediate release of all minors detained for their alleged involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protests that took place in August. The directive comes after growing public criticism, particularly following an incident last week when three minors and an adult reportedly fainted during court proceedings in Abuja.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who spoke to State House correspondents on Monday after meeting with the president. According to Mr Idris, the president ordered the release of the minors “without prejudice to any legal processes there are,” emphasising that the well-being of the young detainees must be prioritised.
In addition, the president has instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to ensure the welfare of the minors and to facilitate their reunion with their families. Mr Idris also revealed that a committee will be established to investigate the actions of officials involved in the detention and trial process. Any official found in violation of the law will face disciplinary measures.
While the police have defended their decision to prosecute the minors, public backlash has intensified, with many Nigerians and human rights groups condemning the detention of minors and the use of a regular court instead of a juvenile court for their trial.
The Ministry of Women Affairs recently disclosed that 52 minors were detained following the August protest, during which thousands of Nigerians rallied to demand improved living conditions. The president’s intervention is seen as a response to these concerns and as a commitment to uphold the rights of young citizens.
