NiMet Prepares For 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction Unveiling.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has commenced preparations for the public unveiling of the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), scheduled for the first quarter of next year.
The SCP serves as a vital tool, offering insights into forthcoming seasonal conditions to mitigate climate risks, enhance adaptation strategies, and bolster food security. As part of the United Nations’ Early Warning for All (EW4ALL) initiative led by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the SCP aligns with global efforts to improve resilience against climate challenges.
In a statement issued on Friday, NiMet described the forecast as a rigorous scientific process that incorporates global and regional models alongside atmospheric indicators with significant connections to Nigeria’s climatic patterns. The resulting SCP document provides critical information for policy-making, planning, and decision-making for both public and private sector stakeholders.
Sectors reliant on weather-sensitive operations, such as agriculture, aviation, construction, water resources, health, trade, and tourism, are expected to benefit significantly from the prediction.
As part of its preparatory efforts, NiMet recently inducted and trained new members into the Task Team responsible for producing the 2025 SCP. Speaking at the induction ceremony in Abuja, Haruna Zakari, the Task Team Coordinator and Technical Assistant to NiMet’s Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, underscored the significance of the team’s work.
Zakari noted that the Task Team’s mandate to produce a document of national importance requires professionalism and dedication. “The DG/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, believes the carefully selected Task Team will deliver a remarkable document within the projected timeline,” he stated.
He further emphasised the importance of early warnings in strengthening Nigeria’s economic resilience and sustainability. Following the induction, the newly trained members will integrate fully into the Task Team to ensure a smooth process for developing the SCP and drafting the document.
NiMet’s efforts highlight its commitment to providing reliable climate information to support national development and safeguard livelihoods across weather-sensitive industries.
