Seven Vigilantes Killed In Ambush By Suspected Bandits In Niger State.
Seven vigilantes, part of the Yan-Sakai group, were tragically killed by suspected bandits in an attack in the Makogi/Ungwan Elbi area of Mariga Local Government, Niger State.
The incident occurred while the vigilantes were escorting over 50 bags of harvested maize from a nearby village to the Bangi headquarters of the local government. According to reports, the group was ambushed by the bandits on their return journey after successfully ensuring the safety of farmers.
In an effort to defend themselves, the vigilantes engaged in a fierce exchange of gunfire with the assailants, injuring several of the bandits. However, despite their resistance, seven vigilantes lost their lives in the confrontation.
A local resident, Salihu Wamba, confirmed that no farmers were harmed in the attack, as they had already reached the village before the ambush occurred. It was revealed that the farmers had sought the protection of the Yan-Sakai vigilantes due to ongoing security concerns in the area, which have led to a rise in bandit activity.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Wasiu Abiodun, clarified that the victims were members of the Yan-Sakai vigilante group, not the farmers. He stated, “Vigilante men from Wamba/Yan-Sakai were ambushed within Makogi/Ungwan Elbi by suspected kidnappers, which unfortunately led to the loss of seven lives.”
In response to the attack, both police and military tactical teams have been deployed to the area to ensure the safety of the community and prevent further incidents. Authorities are committed to maintaining a secure environment as the harvest season continues.
