Spurs’ Vicario Undergoes Surgery After Playing With Broken Ankle In Manchester City Victory.
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has undergone surgery after bravely playing 60 minutes with a broken ankle during Spurs’ remarkable 4-0 victory over Manchester City on Saturday.
The 28-year-old Italian was injured in the first half following a collision with City winger Savinho. Despite the injury, Vicario continued to play through the pain, helping his team secure a stunning win at the Etihad Stadium.
“Sometimes football gives you its highs, and sometimes it challenges you in ways you don’t expect,” Vicario shared on social media after the match. “I played 60 minutes at the Etihad with a broken bone in my ankle, giving absolutely everything I had for the team. Unfortunately, there was no way around this one. I needed surgery.”
He expressed his disappointment at not being able to help the team for the time being but vowed to support his teammates during his recovery.
Spurs have not set a timeline for Vicario’s return but confirmed that their medical staff will assess him before determining when he can resume training. Since joining the club from Empoli in June 2023, Vicario has been a key figure for Tottenham, missing only four matches, none of them in the Premier League.
In Vicario’s absence, 36-year-old Fraser Forster has stepped in as deputy, playing in the Carabao Cup win over Coventry and Europa League fixtures against AZ Alkmaar and Galatasaray.
Under manager Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham are currently sixth in the Premier League, following their impressive victory over the defending champions, and seventh in the Europa League with three wins and one defeat from their opening four games.
