“Never Knew You Wrote A Letter To Abacha Not To Kill Me” Obasanjo Thanks Gowon Following Revelation

Obasanjo Thanks Gowon For Intervention During Abacha’s Regime.

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed profound gratitude to General Yakubu Gowon (rtd.), a former Head of State, for advocating on his behalf during General Sani Abacha’s military regime. Obasanjo, who was imprisoned during Abacha’s crackdown on alleged coup plotters, revealed his appreciation while responding to Gowon’s remarks at a Christmas carol event in Plateau State.

Speaking at the Plateau Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival in Jos South Local Government Area, Gowon shared that he had written a personal letter to Abacha, urging clemency for Obasanjo. “I told him [Abacha] that God made him a leader to do good, not evil,” Gowon said, explaining that the letter, delivered by his wife, may have influenced Abacha’s decision.

Gowon expressed joy that Obasanjo not only survived the ordeal but later became Nigeria’s President in 1999.

In his response the following day, Obasanjo admitted he was unaware of Gowon’s intervention until the revelation at the festival. “I went round the world thanking those who appealed and prayed for my release from prison. But I did not know that you wrote a personal letter for my release until you said it yesterday; I thank you for that,” Obasanjo said.

He also commended Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his efforts in fostering peace and urged him to continue prioritising the state’s development.

The event, which served as a moment of reflection on Nigeria’s political history, was attended by several dignitaries, including former governors Jonah Jang, Joshua Dariye, Boni Haruna, and Governor Mutfwang.

The interaction between Obasanjo and Gowon was particularly significant, given their complex political past, including Obasanjo’s involvement in the 1975 coup that overthrew Gowon’s government. Despite their history, the moment highlighted a spirit of reconciliation and mutual respect.
