NNPC Confirms Port Harcourt Refinery Is Operational.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has reaffirmed that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery is operational, with ongoing loading activities at the facility.
Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mele Kyari, made the announcement during the commissioning of the NUPENG Towers in Lagos on Wednesday. Addressing concerns raised by critics, Kyari extended an open invitation to human rights activist and lawyer Mr Femi Falana, along with other sceptics, to join a tour of the refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna to assess their functionality firsthand.
Responding to controversies surrounding the blending of petroleum products, Kyari clarified that blending is a standard and essential part of the refining process. “Blending ensures products meet the required specifications for different regions. Without it, off-spec products could damage vehicles,” he explained, emphasising that this practice is universal in refining operations.
Kyari also congratulated the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on the completion of the NUPENG Towers, urging the union to maintain dialogue and cooperation with NNPC Ltd. and the Federal Government.
He highlighted the positive impact of President Tinubu’s interventions in the oil and gas sector, noting that recent Executive Orders have attracted increased investments and created prospects for more job opportunities within the industry.
The NNPC’s assurance follows ongoing efforts to revitalise the nation’s refining capacity and address energy challenges through operational improvements and stakeholder engagement.
