EFCC Launches Investigation Into NFF Over Alleged Fund Mismanagement.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated an investigation into allegations of abuse of office and fund diversion within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
In a letter dated 28 November 2024, addressed to the National Sports Commission (NSC), the EFCC requested detailed information on the NFF’s financial dealings and sponsorships. The letter, signed by Farouk Dogondaji on behalf of the EFCC chairman, emphasised the need for transparency to conclude the investigation.
The anti-graft agency has asked the NSC to provide:
– A list of sponsors for the NFF and the Professional Football League (both corporate and individual) from 2022 to date.
– Details of donations received, including the amounts and the banks into which the funds were deposited.
– Specifics on funds released for the prosecution of three major football tournaments beyond the regular budgetary allocations.
– Information on donations from FIFA for the preparation of the Super Falcons for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, and from CAF for participation in the 2023 AFCON finals.
– A list of companies appointed as consultants for the NFF and Professional Football League.
The EFCC highlighted its statutory authority under Section 38 (1) and (2) of the EFCC Establishment Act, 2004, as the basis for the request.
This development follows growing concerns about financial mismanagement within the NFF. The investigation is expected to shed light on the federation’s financial practices and address accountability in the administration of Nigerian football.
The National Sports Commission and other stakeholders are yet to comment on the EFCC’s request.
