Southampton have parted ways with manager Russell Martin after a crushing 5-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday left the club nine points adrift of Premier League safety. The decision marks the end of Martin’s 18-month tenure, which included leading the Saints to promotion last season.

Martin, 38, was appointed in 2023 and enjoyed early success, guiding Southampton back to the Premier League by defeating Leeds United in the play-off final at Wembley. However, this season has been a stark contrast, with the club managing just one league win—a victory over Everton in November—and scoring a league-low 11 goals across 16 matches.
The Spurs defeat was Southampton’s 13th loss of the campaign, prompting the club’s board to act. In a statement, Southampton acknowledged Martin’s contributions but admitted that results had failed to meet expectations:
“We have all been on the same page in recognising the urgency of needing results to improve. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months.”
The club also reflected on the highs of Martin’s reign, particularly the memorable play-off final win that secured their return to the top flight.
Southampton Under-21s manager Simon Rusk will take interim charge of the senior team, with his first test being a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Premier League leaders Liverpool at St Mary’s on Wednesday.
Martin’s departure came on the same day Wolves sacked manager Gary O’Neil, highlighting the intense pressure facing struggling Premier League managers. Southampton now face a daunting battle to avoid relegation, with the search for a new manager likely to begin immediately.
