Breaking: Dele Farotimi Released After 21 Days In Detention

Dele Farotimi Released After 21 Days In Detention.

Dele Farotimi, a prominent human rights lawyer and author, has been released from detention in Ekiti after spending 21 days in custody. His detention followed allegations of defamation made by renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Afe Babalola, over claims in Farotimi’s book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, a global bestseller on Amazon.

Farotimi was freed on Tuesday after meeting the bail conditions set on 20 December by an Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court. His release was confirmed by fellow activist Omoyele Sowore.

“I am pleased to report that Dele Farotimi is no longer being held at the prison yards in Ekiti State and is now returning home to Lagos,” Sowore announced on X. “The struggle continues! Happy holidays to you all!”

Farotimi’s release came three days after Labour Party leader Peter Obi offered to fulfil the bail conditions. The conditions included a ₦30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must own a house), the surrender of his passport, and a ban on media interviews.

Obi’s involvement was revealed by Tanko Yunusa, former spokesperson for Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign. In a statement on X, Yunusa explained that Obi, a staunch advocate of the rule of law, sought to ensure the situation was resolved in a fair and lawful manner.

“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As a respecter of rule of law, due process, and order, he offered to take Dele Farotimi on the bail conditions,” Yunusa stated.

Yunusa also conveyed Obi’s gratitude to the courts and other parties involved, emphasising the former presidential candidate’s desire for a resolution that respects Nigeria’s legal system and benefits all stakeholders.

Farotimi’s detention has drawn attention to his ongoing campaign to expose corruption within Nigeria’s judiciary. His book, which highlights systemic flaws in the country’s legal system, has been praised for sparking critical discussions but has also attracted controversy.

While his release marks the end of his time in detention, the larger battle against judicial corruption and systemic injustice continues. Farotimi’s supporters have reiterated their commitment to advocating for accountability and transparency in the Nigerian legal system.

“The struggle continues,” Sowore said, echoing the sentiments of many who view Farotimi’s ordeal as a reflection of broader challenges in Nigeria’s justice system.
