JUST-IN: Lagos State To Enforce Single-Use Plastics Ban In Two Weeks

The Lagos State Government has declared that it will commence the enforcement of its ban on single-use plastics (SUPs) in just two weeks’ time.

The announcement was made by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, during his inspection tour which covered flood-prone areas, ongoing projects, and concluded at the Ilubirin Waterfront.

The ban, initially announced in December 2024, targets single-use plastics and Styrofoam, following an earlier initiative in January 2024 to phase out Styrofoam usage across the state. This policy aims to combat the rising tide of plastic waste and its detrimental effects on the environment.

“Plastic pollution is a critical issue that not only contributes to flooding but also to the broader degradation of our environment,” Commissioner Wahab remarked. “By enforcing this ban, we are taking a bold step to safeguard our waterways, reduce waste, and foster sustainable practices within our community.”

The government has not only set enforcement dates but is also actively collaborating with various stakeholders to increase awareness. There’s a strong push to educate both residents and businesses about viable, eco-friendly alternatives to disposable plastics.

Environmental advocates have praised this initiative, highlighting the necessity for robust public education and stringent enforcement to ensure the policy’s effectiveness.
