INEC Denies Plans To Destroy Unclaimed PVCs Amidst Rumours.
In a rapid response to circulating rumours, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has categorically denied any intention to dispose of over six million unclaimed Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs). The commission has branded these rumours as “incorrect” and affirmed that no such policy has ever been contemplated.
The contentious report had suggested that INEC was considering a drastic measure to withdraw and destroy PVCs that have remained uncollected for ten years, purportedly as one of 208 recommendations following a comprehensive review of the 2023 general elections. This narrative painted the proposed destruction as a response to the significant number of unclaimed PVCs, with over six million cards still uncollected since the 2023 elections, including many issued as far back as 2015.
Addressing the challenge of unclaimed PVCs, INEC’s efforts to boost collection rates were highlighted in the report. “Following the publication of the Register of Voters, the commission made available the PVCs for collection by voters on December 12, 2022. The exercise was initially planned to end on the 22nd of January 2023. However, due to a substantial number of registered voters yet to collect their cards, the deadline was extended to the 5th of February 2023,” it was explained.
To make the process more accessible, INEC decentralised the distribution, bringing it to local ward levels from January 6 to 15, 2023. They also introduced an online tracking system for PVCs and collaborated with civil society organisations (CSOs) to enhance the pickup process.
On Sunday, INEC took to social media to quash the rumours, stating, “The commission urges the public to discountenance these unfounded claims,” thereby underlining their commitment to an unhindered electoral process without resorting to the destruction of voter materials.
This clarification from INEC should reassure the public and registered voters that their right to vote is preserved, and efforts continue to ensure that every eligible voter can access their PVC ahead of future elections.
