Military Confirms Elimination Of Key Bandit Commanders In Northwest Nigeria.

In a significant blow to banditry in northwest Nigeria, the Nigerian military has confirmed the deaths of several high-ranking members of a notorious bandit group during a recent operation. Operation Fansan Yamma, launched on Wednesday, targeted the hideouts of the wanted bandits’ leader, Bello Turji, across Sokoto and Zamfara states.

According to a statement released by Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, the operation, which took place between January 20 and 21, resulted in the death of Turji’s second-in-command, Aminu Kanawa. Alongside Kanawa, several other key commanders and allies were “neutralised,” including Dosso, Bello Turji’s younger brother, and Danbokolo, one of Turji’s closest associates.

Maj-Gen. Buba detailed the extent of the operation’s success, stating, “Troops successfully neutralized Aminu Kanawa, the second-in-command to Bello Turji, and inflicted terminal injuries on Dosso and Danbokolo.” He further listed other commanders who were eliminated during the offensive: Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, Kabiru Gebe, Bello Buba, and Dan Inna Kahon-Saniya-Yafi-Bahaushe.

The military operation also extended to the Gebe and Isa Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Sokoto State and the Gidan Rijiya area in Shinkafi LGA, Zamfara State, where over 24 fleeing terrorists from Turji’s camp were neutralised.

In a related engagement around the Fakai high ground, troops confronted and killed Suleiman, a loyalist of the late terrorist leader Halilu Sububu. Suleiman was reportedly leading a reinforcement team to aid Turji’s camp but was killed in the ensuing firefight.

This operation signifies a major stride in the ongoing efforts to curb banditry and restore peace in regions plagued by such criminal activities. The military emphasized its commitment to continuing these operations until security is fully restored in the affected areas.

Residents of the targeted regions have expressed a mix of relief and cautious optimism, hoping that this development marks a turning point in the fight against banditry. Local authorities have praised the military’s efforts and urged the community to remain vigilant and cooperative with security forces.

The operation’s success is seen as a critical step towards dismantling the network of bandit groups that have caused significant disruption and hardship in northwest Nigeria.
