UNIZIK Expels Student Over Viral Lecturer Assault Incident.

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has expelled a student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, for allegedly assaulting a lecturer in an incident that went viral online.

The decision was announced in a statement on Friday by UNIZIK’s Acting Registrar, Victor Modebelu, following an internal investigation into the altercation.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 4th February 2025, at the university’s Faculty of Arts and involved Dr Chukwudi Michael. According to eyewitness accounts, the student was dancing and filming a TikTok video in a corridor when the lecturer, attempting to pass, tapped her on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me.”

Reports suggest that the student reacted angrily, accusing the lecturer of “hitting” her. The situation quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which she allegedly grabbed the lecturer’s clothes and bit him on the wrist and arm. Onlookers’ attempts to de-escalate the situation were unsuccessful, leading to chaos in the area.

A viral video captured the moment the student was dancing before reacting to the lecturer’s attempt to pass.

University’s Response

In response to the incident, UNIZIK’s Acting Head of Information, Public Relations, and Protocol, Njelita Louis O, released a statement affirming the university’s commitment to discipline and ethical conduct.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Joseph Ikechebelu, ordered a thorough and impartial investigation, stressing that UNIZIK remains dedicated to upholding moral and academic excellence.

Following the findings, the university took decisive action by expelling the student to serve as a deterrent and reinforce the institution’s core values of discipline, self-reliance, and respect.

Prof Ikechebelu reiterated that UNIZIK will continue to maintain a safe and professional learning environment, urging students to uphold decorum and respect in all academic engagements,
