Lagos Police Reinstate Speaker’s Security Amid Public Speculation.

The Lagos State Police Command has reinstated the security detail of Mojisola Meranda, Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, following a brief withdrawal that stirred public concern. Commissioner of Police Moshood Jimoh made the announcement during a press briefing on Thursday at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, the state capital.

Jimoh clarified that the temporary removal of Meranda’s security team earlier in the day was part of a routine audit exercise conducted by the police. “The withdrawal was administrative and not driven by any ulterior motive,” he told journalists, seeking to quell speculation that had begun to circulate. By Thursday evening, the Speaker’s security detail, including police officers assigned to her protection, had been fully restored.

The decision to pull the security team had sparked a flurry of reactions, with some questioning the move’s timing amid the Assembly’s ongoing leadership controversy. However, the swift reinstatement appears to have eased tensions, with the police reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding public officials and maintaining stability in Lagos State.

Public response to the development has been mixed. While some expressed relief at the resolution, others voiced scepticism about the audit explanation, hinting at possible political undercurrents. Nevertheless, no concrete evidence of alternative motives has emerged, and the police have stood firm on their account.

The restoration ensures that Speaker Meranda, a key figure in Lagos politics known for her focus on legislative reform, can continue her duties without disruption. The Lagos State Police Command has reiterated its dedication to protecting lives and property, underscoring that the safety of the state’s leadership remains a top priority.

As the dust settles, attention is expected to return to the Assembly’s leadership controversy that has been a pressing matter in recent weeks.
