Mudashiru Obasa Reclaims Speaker Role In Lagos State House Of Assembly Amid Controversy.

In a dramatic twist of events, Mudashiru Obasa has returned to his position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the sudden resignation of Mojisola Meranda. The political upheaval, which has gripped Lagos and stirred intense debate, saw Obasa reinstated on Monday, 03 March 2025, marking the latest chapter in an ongoing leadership saga within the state’s legislative body.

Details emerging from the Assembly suggest that Obasa’s return comes after a turbulent period that began with his impeachment on 13 January 2025. At that time, a majority of lawmakers accused him of gross misconduct and abuse of office, allegedly linked to a £43.5 billion fraud scandal involving backup vehicles for assembly members. Mojisola Meranda, his deputy assumed the role, becoming the first female Speaker of the Assembly. Her tenure, however, proved short-lived, with her resignation paving the way for Obasa’s reinstatement under circumstances that remain murky.

Obasa, a seasoned politician representing Agege Constituency I, has consistently asserted his legitimacy. In a recent interview, he declared, “I remain the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly until the right thing is done,” accusing Meranda of irregularities during the leadership transition. Reports suggest he re-entered the Assembly complex with security personnel and loyal lawmakers to reclaim his seat, though these accounts are yet to be officially confirmed.

Reactions within the Assembly and among Lagosians are sharply divided. Supporters of Obasa view his return as a rightful restoration, celebrating what they see as a triumph over an unjust ousting. Critics, however, have branded the move an “unacceptable charade,” with some lawmakers reportedly claiming it defies the will of the majority who removed him. One Assembly spokesperson hinted at resistance, suggesting the reinstatement “will not work,” pointing to deep fractures within the legislative ranks.

Obasa has remained defiant in the face of opposition. In a press conference, he likened himself to a general at war, stating, “I am not disturbed, perturbed or worried,” projecting confidence despite the chaos. His detractors, meanwhile, continue to question the legitimacy of both his initial removal and his abrupt return, raising concerns over due process.

This remains a developing story, with further details expected to emerge as the situation unfolds. For now, the Lagos State House of Assembly stands as a focal point of political tension, with Obasa’s reinstatement adding fuel to an already fiery dispute. Lagosians and observers alike await clarity on what promises to be a contentious chapter in the state’s governance.
