Two Internet Fraudsters Jailed In Abuja.
Two suspected internet fraudsters, Godwin Christopher and Temitope Ature Mario, have been sentenced to one year in prison by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Maitama.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) spokesman, Dele Oyewale, confirmed in a statement on Tuesday night that Justice M.Y. Halilu convicted the pair after they pleaded guilty to separate one-count charges of internet fraud.
Christopher was found guilty of attempting to cheat by personation after creating a fake Facebook account under the name Annita Scott, pretending to be an American from Atlanta, Georgia. His actions violated Section 95 of the Penal Code Act, 2004, and were punishable under Section 324.
Similarly, Mario was convicted for impersonating a US citizen named Karlee Jean on Facebook, an offence contrary to Section 95, read alongside Section 321 of the Penal Code Laws (1900), and punishable under Section 324.
Following their guilty pleas, prosecution counsel S. N. Roberts urged the court to convict and sentence them accordingly.
Justice Halilu sentenced both men to one year in prison or an alternative fine of N100,000 each. Additionally, their mobile phones were forfeited to the Federal Government.
“The two convicts were arrested for internet fraud, prosecuted, and convicted,” Oyewale added.
