Zirkzee Scores First European Goal As Manchester United Held By Real Sociedad.
Joshua Zirkzee opened his European goal-scoring account for Manchester United, but the Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Sociedad in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie.
The Dutch forward broke the deadlock in the 57th minute, firing a low shot from the edge of the box that caught home goalkeeper Alex Remiro off guard. However, United’s lead was short-lived as Real Sociedad equalised through a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty, awarded following a VAR review for handball by Bruno Fernandes.
Manchester United dominated the match for much of the game, with Andre Onana untroubled before the penalty decision. Fernandes came close to scoring, seeing one effort cleared off the line by Aritz Elustondo and another free-kick narrowly missing the target.
After the equaliser, Real Sociedad grew in confidence, forcing Onana into a fine save to deny Brais Mendez’s long-range effort. Orri Oskarsson had two late chances to snatch victory for the hosts, but Onana stood firm, pushing away a goalbound effort in stoppage time.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged his side’s efforts but suggested their decision-making in key moments needs improvement.
“One thing that I am sure of – they’re anxious to score goals and win games,” Amorim said. “They are doing their best, but sometimes they’re not making the best decisions in their positions.”
The tie remains finely poised ahead of the second leg, which will take place at Old Trafford on Thursday, 13 March.
