Sowore Criticises Northern Leaders Over School Closures During Ramadan.
Prominent Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly condemned the recent decision by some northern leaders to shut down schools to enable children to observe Ramadan fasting.
The policy, currently being enforced in Bauchi, Katsina, Kebbi, and Kano States, has sparked widespread criticism from concerned citizens. Many have expressed concerns over the impact on students’ education, arguing that such a move further disadvantages children in public schools.
Weighing in on the issue, Sowore accused the policymakers of hypocrisy, alleging that while they close down public schools, their own children receive education in elite private institutions or schools abroad.
In a statement on his official Facebook page, he wrote:
“Those ignoramuses who decided to shut down schools during Ramadan Fasting do not have their own children enrolled in these economically disadvantaged public schools.
“Their children or wards attend schools overseas or high-end private schools in Abuja, supported by funds designated for the education of socioeconomically challenged students (the poor) in these run-down schools, which do not close for Ramadan Fasting. Irresponsible and wicked leaders.”
Sowore’s remarks highlight ongoing concerns about the state of public education in Nigeria, particularly in regions where access to quality learning is already limited. The debate over the policy continues, with many calling for a review to prioritise the academic development of students.
